Is there any way to test a VDO temperature gauge without the sender unit?

I have a VDO temperature gauge (old round type) and I want to test it before I go and get a sender unit. Any help is appreciated

Hook up the battery to it and get the sender wire and tap it to the ground. If you hold it to the post it will peg and then fry the meter. So concentrate.If the needle jumps a little- the meter is OK
