  1. Yes, it is annoying to know that this is the United States of America and NOT America and have people refer to it as such.

More annoying is the fact that people of the United States say they're American, which is technically correct, but they're referring to the country of the United States and not the continent of America.

Though it does sound awkward to say, I'm a U.S.Aan.  It's understandable to abbreviate "I'm a United States of American" to "I'm an American".  However, it should be also understood that when one says that it also refers to two continents.   And the ideals of the U.S.A. are certainly NOT followed throughout the continents.

  2. Actually, America would be "these continents" not "this continent" since there is North and South America in the 7 continent model we use here in the US. To your question though, no, it doesn't bother me and it doesn't sound ignorant. America, even though it does refer to continents, is still a nickname for the US.

  3. Yes I was thinking that the other day...people are like "THIS IS AMERICA!"  Well, no, it is actually the United States OF America.  We are in the North American continent.  WE ARE THE UNITED STATES!  Glad it irritates someone else.

    Go Texas!

  4. And, did you know that the country to the south IS NOT Mexico?

Do you nickpick when people call the United Mexican States, "Mexico"?

Do you nickpick when people call the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, "Afghanistan"?

Do you nickpick when people call the Federal Republic of Germany, "Germany"?

Do you nickpick when people call Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, "Hong Kong"?

Do you nickpick when people call the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, "North Korea"?

Do you nickpick when people call Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, "Macao"?

Do you nickpick when people call United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, "United Kingdom"?

Do you nickpick when people call Lao People's Democratic Republic, "Laos"?

Do you nickpick when people call the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, "Libya"?

  5. I know the country's name is the United States of America, or America for short.  Sounds OK to me.

I also know we have Candidates to the Presidency, not the "presidence".

  6. I guess if you want to get technical about it, then the continent isn't America, it is North America. The majority of people know that America refers to the United States, even your song, God Bless America, doesn't refer to it as the United States.

  7. I know what ya mean. Its the United States of America

  8. It's true.  I think that most people are just too lazy to say the entire name.  The English language makes it tricky, too.  There is no real name for people from the USA.  In Spanish the is a word the basically means United States-ian.  In English our options are:  "I am from the USA" or "I am American."  That is part of where it comes from, but you are right.  Everyone from the tip-top of Canada all the way down to the southern-most point of Argentina and Chile are Americans.

  9. America is a conjunction of 2 continents, North America and South America.

USA is a country consisting of 52 states (hence the term United State of America).

  10. really, i have not noticed that this country's name is not the united states of america, or america for short.  So what country is this then.

As far i can tell this country is called america, and the continents are called north america, and south america.

both the country and the continent aer names after a map making that was onboard the ships the discovered and recorded the finding of america.

Can you please inform us as to the real name of this country.

  11. "America" was derived from the name of an Italian who falsely took credit for Columbuse's discovery of the new world after Chris was banned by the church because of the inhumane treatement he subjected the natives of Hispanola to in his insatiable greed for gold. These "indians" had no gold themselves, but unfoprtunately had gotten some from their trading with the native civilizations in South America. Columbas wasn't convinced however and enslaved, tortured and burned them alive to discover the location of their secret horde. Columbus thought they were "Indians" because he was convinced he had sailed around the world to the Indian subcontinent. This name seemed to stick to the native population of north "America" along with the deragatory term "savage", derived from the French, which itself meant "native". The term "yankee" is rumored to have originated from Dutch slang for "Pirate". For hundreds of years the coast of the new world was swarming with "privateers" who became so entrenched in the new world that Europeans employed them as mercenaries to plunder each other's merchant vessels. All the best known pirates were once employeed by one crown or another. Even after America had become independant, the government still used pirates to rob French merchants sailing into New Orleans, then part of the "Lousiana territory". After the purchace of this territory from Napolean, the pirate was relieved of his duties (i.e., "fired") and in protest the pirate captain burned his colonial camp to the ground.  The pirate nature of the Yankees continued however and they (and their government)  essentially stole northern mexico from the Spanish crown, aquiring Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Nearly 100 years later, the Dole pineapple company staged a similar manuever, capturing Hawaii from the sovergn queen of this island nation.  However, the best example of Anglo ignorance is the English name of the most famaliar animal in Australia. The Australian colonists asked the native population the name of the strange hopping animal and the reply was "kangaroo". In Aboriginie this means "I don't understand what you are saying".

  12. Do you call yourself a United Statesean?  I bet you say you're American.

And in America, this country of ours, we have presidents.  We also don't Know things, we simply know them.

Work on your grammar and spelling skills and we'll pay attention to you.  I don't see you moving out of the country, either.  And aren't you glad that you can say these things?  If we lived in Colombia, they'd drag you out of your house and shoot you for speaking poorly about the nation and her citizenry.

    I'm just saying....

  13. I think New Britain has a nice ring to it.

Plus it would show respect as it was Brits who discovered America, (and I'm correct in saying America).
