Yes, he came from an impoverished, single parent home and ended up applying himself, being able to go to Harvard and do well enough to be admitted into Harvard Law School.  He was the first black president of the Harvard LAw Review and the he returned back to Chicago after his studies to help the community from which he came.  He then spent time volunteering and performed public service, ultimately being elected as an Illinois state senator and then a US Senator.

McCain on the other hand, went to the Naval Academy and was immediately accepted b/c as a legacy (his father and Grandfather went there and became Admirals).  He graduated near the bottom of his class (3rd from last) and had a lackluster military career, crashing 3 planes (not including the two he lost in Viet Nam service).  When he was released as a POW, he received special favors and remained on Active Duty, even flight status for extra pay, even though he was disabled and not able to fly.  (He still receives disability pay with his Navy retirement).  He then went into congress for a term and then during his first term as a Senator, was caught in the Keating Five scandal.
