  1. The endorsement packages from smaller companies are usually not formal.  Most companies simply sponsor by providing product, sometimes at cost, and only pay when they use a picture or have you in an ad.  For the shortboard pros who make the ASP tour, they are usually provided entry fees, travel money, and for the higher ranked pros, fees based on visibility.  Longboard pros have less active financial arrangements.  Even the top pros often only have their entry fee and travel paid.   If you are interested, I actively coach/manage a few professional surfers currently and can give you further details on what you might expect.  Please contact me directly through my web site for further information.

  2. I work at a surfing company and over hear conversations.

Ussually the athlete and the sponsor agree on the following:

The term, how long the contract will last.

The payment for the athlete, some get product only, some get product and cash. Rumors are that the top WCT guys get $200K+ per year.

Whether or not the sponsorship is exclusive or if the rider can have other sponsors as well. Bonuses for magazine ads, TV / video exposure and contest results.

Also sometimes the riders have a pro model and they get a cut for each unit sold with their name on it.

    Hope that helps!

  3. I'm not sure how much the other answers know as some of their facts seem way off. My brother has been paid by sponsers since he was 17. The top pros recieve way more than $200,000 a year. Kelly probably gets a 7 figure sposonship deal. And Taj, Andy, Park, and Fanning will be easily in the hundreds of thousands. I guarantee there are no WCT surfers that get only their sponsorship fees paid for. This would only be applicable to average sponsored grommets. The lower pros on the WQS get tens of thousands a year.  My brother uses the majority of his sponsorship for travelling, (he is almost never at home). Most of this is travelling around the globe for competition, which you discuss with your sponsor what you should be doing, but there are rarely any strict rules. There are also long training trips out of season. Then some extra bonuses are given for exposure. He has a certain amount of money his sponsores can give him each year depending of the sq cm he clocks up in magazine pics. The sponsors also provide a few photo shoot trips abroad, and modeling shoots.

    Hope this helps.
