  1. One of my good friends works in the mines there - this is one of her emails to me

"just thought I would drop you an update on what's what now that I've been here for "2 months!"

I working at the LNO mines just 15 minutes away from our place in town...we process nickle ore..

I'm doing the mine controllers position and really luff it!...

I monitor all vehicles under ground and all staff by 2 way radio and enter all the data into their in-house system...it's pretty full on from the time I start til I knock off 12 hrs later.

..as for the money..it's just insane!!

    I'm doing 8 days on and 6 days off...all 12 hr shifts...one roster I do days then the follwing roster I do nites...7 - 7...but it's really good...

I get picked up by the BHP coach...(it's really flash too...luxury coach) each morning and then I get dropped off each time after work at my front door....is that good or what!!!

I've just finished my training today so tomorrow I'm gonna run the show all by myself...that's a bit scary but I know I can do it....I think!..lol...

I've just done 16 days staright and I've got another 7 to go....I only got 16 days cos I was in full training but now that it's all finished I will only do my roster now.....

There's not much here in Leinster to spend money on because I get my meals supplied and we don't pay rent or power.

All the houses and donga's (batches) are air conditioned and serviced by cleaners when we are at work. We come home to a cooked meal, 5 hot dishes plus 4 vegies then you have your about 6 deserts also and if they isn't good enough you have

salads and  crackers & cheese and then fresh fruit and ice cream...it's just amazing...oh and I fogot the soup and all the different kinds or rols, buns and bread to accompany it all...

We grab our lunch while we are there for the next day otherwise you have to go into the mess before you go out to the mine but there's too many people so I just grab mine once I've finished tea..."

  2. Your thinking of leaving a desk job and working in a mine? or working for a mining company?

I dont know much abouty mines, but I think you could try looking for a desk job with a drilling or oil company, I guess they should pay better.

Sorry, I couldnt be much help, but Best of Luck with your new Job and your new life.

  3. First of all, there are basically no mines in Perth.  You must be prepared to travel.

Some mine sites do FIFO (fly in, fly out) for their workers.  Others expect you to live in nearby towns.

Check out company websites, seek.com.au etc before you make a decision.  Even office conditions at mine sites are going to be extremely different from what you expect.
