I am about to adopt a PMU foal.

However I want to do more.

Is there anything I can do to help? (Fundraise? Etc.)

  1. The only way to stop production is to get menopausal women to stop taking it.  It's something too big for you to tackle alone, but you can make small progress by researching alternative remedies and risks from premarin, and start educating your mom, aunts, and other adult women you know.

  2. The good news is that Premarin demand is way down, there are better alternatives out there that don't use cruelty to horses.

PLUS Premarin use has been linked to cancer.

I work in a pharmacy and I have yet to even fill a scrip for it. It is the least used of the hormone replacers in my area.

My doctor won't even prescribe it.

So in the US it should start taking care of itself, especially with the cancer link. Not sure about Canada.

  3. Premarine production was greatly reduced about 4 years ago. Thank God. Before that there were standard of care rules that were strictly enforced. Urine was to be only purchased from contracted farms. The mares were living at pasture in a natural herd environment from early Spring to late Fall. They were in the barn for the winter - alternated frequently.

Not as bad off as some "pampered" show horses that are kept in windowless boxes with an hour or two of turn out a day.

Currently Premarine is used in many topical ointments and not as much in HRT drugs.

I was on the board for a PMU foal placement group from 1999 to 2005 . FoalQuest

The foals were mainly high quality - many with impressive bloodlines and papers - many warmblood types etc.

BE SURE YOU ARE ADOPTING A FOAL that is REALLY from a farm that holds a PMU contract. There are many many jerks out there that USED to have a PMU contract and they are still breeding horses to try and get more $$ than the feedlot will pay for a foal. They are preying on the bleeding hearted UNinformed.

A PMU foal has never ever been touched let alone trained in any way. They have been in a pasture with Mom since birth.

I trained a number of them (at one point I had 5 "wild weanlings" at once) and still have 3 that are now 8 and 7 years old.

Feel free to contact me if you need any help or further info.

  4. Educate your friends and relatives and tell them their is an alternative that is derived from plants and does not involve bringing foals into this world only to be butchered.  The drug made from plants does not give women the uterine cancer that resulted from using the drug derived from urine.  Everyone can help.  Thank you.
