  1. A Broken wooden broomstick will do the trick.

  2. There are very inexpensive latches you can install with a screwdriver. Tell your local hardware store what you are looking for. They are child proof and burgler proof, safe and attractive. You can install them to what ever level you want the window to stop, and flip the latch if you need to clean the window or get out.

  3. I agree, drilling the holes for a large nail to slide is the best way.

My dad was a police officer and worked with crime prevention in the houses and he was always suggesting that simple trick for people to make their homes safer.

It's simple, hardly costs a thing, but makes you safe.  Even if you're renting, the landlord would probably never see the holes and a would-be burgular is very unlikely to be to figure what is holding the window closed.  Yet in an emergency, should you need to exit out the window you can safely and quickly do so.

  4. Get a piece of trim board and cut it the height of the window. It can be easily removed that way.

  5. The hardware store should sell window locks that s***w onto the edge of the track. Or you can buy a one inch dowl and cut it to the lenghth of the track.

  6. A stick or broom handle, anything which will rest in the track and the right length to allow your desired opening.

  7. different lengths of dowel works great

  8. Yes, Drill holes on both sides of the track about 4inches up from the top of bottom sash with the window closed.

Size the holes for a snug fit on a 12 penny nail, now when the nails are in the holes half way you can open your window 4inches and no more. If you want the window to open more drill two more holes a little further up the track

    Hope this helps.
