I am fom BC and will be living in Alberta for 5 months. I was wondering if I need to get a Alberta drivers lisence? or change any other cards or information? Is there a time period that you have to get them done by?

Also, I will be coming back to BC after the 5 months. I just don't want to get in trouble if I don't do anything about it and I was supposed to...

  1. Technically, you are supposed to change your license and health care after 3 months in a new province.  That would ultimately mean changing your car plates and insurance, and posibly getting an out-of-province inspection for your car.

However, if you have a permanent address that you can use back in BC, you can get around it. Just use your parents or friends address.  Then you 'pretend' that you were only living in ALberta for 2.5 months each time (I'm sure it's likely that you will probably visist home part way through your time here.  No one is really going to ask.  There are plenty of people in Alberta that are hear for a very short time.  In other places, you might have a hard time getting an apartment, but in Alberta we are used to everyone having out-of-province ID.

Please don't tell Alberta Registry and the Ministry of Health that I said that! ;)

  2. I think you're supposed to change to different provinces health care plans after 3 months. Other than that, i have no idea!

  3. Underwear?  <;-)

  4. did you ask this twice? if not, then my answer got deleted for some reason.

If you are moving there permanently your licences and everything must be switched over within 3 months.  Seeing as it is temporary and you have every intention of leaving I'm pretty sure you don't have to change anything.  If you change your intentions and plan to stay afterwards you'll have to change everything immediately.

Call your local MP and ask them for help.  They will be more than willing to give you information.  Or call an MP in the city in Alberta you'll be moving too.

    Good luck!
