  1. Better is in the hand of the user.

I have a Horseman 450 5"x4" and have hired a Phase-1 digital back approx 39mp as great as it is my film (5x4) is so far better that there is no comparison, though the flexibility of the digital back is great.

  2. If you're asking if there's a straight digital camera with more resolution, then sort of. You see, the H3DII is not a straight DSLR: it is a medium format camera with a digital back. Hasselblad and its competitors (Mamiya, Phase-1, Sinar, and Leaf) all make medium format digital backs and cameras. Better Light is a company that makes digital backs for large format cameras. Large format is the peak of film quality, and likewise, is the peak of digital quality. Their  Super 8K-HS back packs a whopping 191.88 megapixels. One of their large format backs was recently used to create a 2.8 GIGApixel panorama.

However, the capture time (not shutter speed, but time for the actual image to be recorded) for these images is ungodly. The larger digital backs require a computer tethered to them (and the Hasselblad and like almost do, since the files are SO massive). Basically, none of these systems are very practical for any work not in a studio or controlled environment.

For action, it doesn't get much better than a Nikon D3: 12 megapixels with 9 or 11fps. The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark-III has 21.1 megapixels, but stands at 5fps.

Of course, to have any of these cameras work to their maximum potential, you would need some high-quality, fast lenses to go along with that.

This better be a LONG term savings plan, because by the time that you save up enough, they'll have a dozen things with higher specs.

Bottom line: yes, these cameras have amazing specs, but you have to understand that there's a lot more to photography than just resolution and shutter speeds and absurdly expensive camera equipment.

  3. "Better" is an interesting term.

The H3D was designed to be a DSLR basically from scratch. It is very good. It is one of the few DSLRs that has a removable sensor.

However, for 99% of the people out there a D3, Mark III ds, or a 5D is plenty of dSLR and leaps more flexible.
