There is nothing on the market that can compete and nothing in the foreseeable future.

No download service will ever match up. At present you can download HD movies from some services but it can take around 5-6 hours to download a movie and have it ready to play. Quicker to pop round to the store and buy the Blu-ray disc.

If you are deciding whether to invest in Blu-ray or wait for something else, go out and buy yourself a PS3 and start enjoying the shows.

Microsoft is working on a new video system called "direct digital download" that is supposed to compete with blu-ray,,, the problem with this in my opinion would be the lack of special features and not having something "permanent", erase your digital download and its gone, a blu-ray you can put on a shelf and watch again 6 months from now....

Nope, not really. HD-DVD was the only other competitior and it was crushed (hurts to think about it) but Sony now has a monopoly because they bought out some movie companies (Im sure HD-DVD did something like that too). Ayway Its blue-Ray Now!

Probably, theres always something coming out, but you'll be fine to go ahead and buy a Blue Ray Disc player.  Nothing will be competing or overtaking it for years.

Remember the old laser disc players?  Sure they were huge, but they are still better than DVD and Blue Ray! lol.
