Question:

Is there anything else I need in my hermit crab tank?

In my 10 gallon aquarium i have two huts [one per crab] a saltwater dish a fresh water dish a food dish and three extra shells.. is that enough? Oh and the bottom is cover 1/2 sand 1/2 coconut fibers!

  1. You might want a humidity gauge and a thermometer - it makes it a lot easier to keep track of the conditions in the tank. If it's too cool, a heater of some sort, too.

    Also, most hermits love to climb, so you might want to stick something in there that they can climb.

    Otherwise, sounds good!

    but remember the area you keep your cage in needs to remain at a fairly warm temperature (78deg. F is ideal). Cool temperatures cause the crabs to be less active. Excessive temperatures can result in overheating and death. Keep the tank out of any air conditioner draft. If keeping it outside during the summer make sure it remains out of direct sunlight. Hermit crabs are not basking creatures like many reptiles. If offered the choice between sun and shade, hermit crabs will always pick the shade.
