a PS3.  From what I have understood, they are backwards compatible, well, except for maybe the cheap-o one.

the 40 gig ps3 wont be able to play ps2 games but the 60 gb and higher models can play dvds ps2 and ps1 games.

sure there is. it's this thing called a different PS3. the original models (20GB and 60GB) are pretty much fully backwards compatible and the original 80GB model is about 80% - 90% backwards compatible (the new 80GB coming out is a 40GB with 40GB of more space). your 40GB will never play PS2 games.
