It's only a weekend trip and I'm staying at a hotel near the airport. What is the one best place to go that's not too far from the airport?

  1. See if the Hotel has any relationships with some of the beach clubs on Costa del Sol.  They are very nice and secure, good place to relax and enjoy the ocean for a day.

  2. Near the Comalapa International Airport, you can visit the town of Olocuilta (famous for their rice-flour pupusas) where you can visit La Casa De La Cultura, an art gallery filled with paintings and sculptures of local artists (including indigenous artists).  Drop into Mi Viejo San Juan restaurant for some of the best typical salvadorean food.

You can also travel out to Lago de Ilopango.  A beautiful lake that has one of the biggest deposits of fresh water in El Salvador.  The lake is nearly 700 feet deep.  It is a popular resort destination.

There's always Panchimalco.  Panchimalco is known for its indigenous population and its festivities. Together with Izalco, Panchimalco is considered one of the last two remaining bastions of indigenous people in El Salvador.  Villagers still weave and wear colorful native textiles and maintain many indigenous traditions.  However, the native language is not one of them. As of the last few years, no Nahuatl speakers remain in Panchimalco.

Nearby attractions include the town Los Planes de Renderos from whose lookout post spectacular views of San Salvador and the valley can be appreciated; the "Puerta del Diablo" (Devil's Gate) rock formation and Balboa Park, a handsome green retreat also overlooking San Salvador. All three are located within a municipal zone also called Panchimalco, though locals interpret Panchimalco to mean only the historic old town. The Panchimalco zone comprises 14 hamlets or cantons: El Divisadero, Pajales, Panchimalquito, Las Crucitas, San Isidro, Los Troncones, Azacualpa, Amayón, Los Palones, Los Planes de Renderos, el Guayabo, El Cedro, Quezalapa, Loma and Media.

Panchimalco was named as among the ten top tourist sites in El Salvador by the Confederation of Latin American Tourist Organizations.

Lastly, you can try the beaches.  Many are a short drive away from the airport, and you are guaranteed to have a great time.

I wish you luck and lots and lots of fun on your trip.  If possible, let me know how it went.
