how much should i bring if i'm just staying for the weekend? and should i get pesos or just bring dollars?

Labor Day in an American holiday, so there most likely won't be any special events during that time.

I'd suggest you just bring an ATM card and withdraw pesos as you need them.  Be sure your bank knows you'll be out of the country, though, or access to your account could be denied.  

How much you bring depends on if you're staying all-inclusive or if you will be buying all your food and drink.  Expect costs to be what you would see in any larger city in the states.
