Is there anything that can be done to the oceans, on a massive enough scale, to make them absorb more CO2?

Since it doesn't look like we're going to stop polluting anytime soon, it appears the only answer is to "help" nature to solve the problem for us. But is this feasible?

  1. highly doubt it think green:)

  2. I think the two answers above me actually bring up really good points.  The answer isn't in the ocean - that would just be moving our problems from one area to another.  The best option (other than simply cutting down on pollution) is conserving our plant-life.

We are destroying forests at a crazy rate (I don't have exact numbers, sorry), and the Amazon in particular which has the potential to help us clear more CO2 than any other forest is one of the worst affected right now.

  3. I suppose we could carbonate the oceans, and make them fizzy like soda pop...

  4. The oceans already absorb 90% of atmospheric CO2, and the more we pump into the air, the more the oceans have to absorb. The more the oceans absorb, the more their surface acidity rises, which means the polar bears aren't the only ones whose climate is changing. I don't think we can "ask" the ocean to do much more without risking major damage to the underwater ecosystems that already hold our planet together.

    Peace.

  5. All plant life converts CO2 into Oxygen, so keep the plants.

All animal life converts Oxygen into CO2, so kill the animals.

    I am being silly though.
