Is there anything that will remove ingrained mould from an older style empty cement pool?

We have a 15yr old pool with ingrained mould on the steps that won't come off with regular bleach etc. All pool shops reccomend is having the entire pool resurfaced. Before we go into this expense was just wondering if anyone knows of any other product that may work. The pool is empty atm. Thanks.

  1. First, you will rue the day if you ever painted your pool!

If you used bleach on the steps, I doubt pool chlorine would help since the concentration is about 12-12.5% vs 6%.  A small pressure washer will help but can also do more damage than good.

I would start with an adjustable hose nozzle, one with a flat spray selection and see how that works before trying a pressure washer.  If you go the route of the pressure washer be careful of any caps or blisters you have because the PW will removed their tops and take care around the tile since you can blow off loose tiles.

Be advised that it is not good practice to leave a pool empty for extended periods.  Since the pool structure is lighter than the ground it sits in, heavy rain can saturate the ground and cause the pool to lift or shift.  This usually breaks the plumbing lines resulting in expensive repairs.

    Good Luck!

    You're welcome!!

  2. I would try giving the entire pool a chlorine wash using about 20-28 gallons of liquid chlorine.....maybe brushing the pool with chlorine and also roughing up the algae with a wire brush first so the chlorine can penetrate may help

  3. Have you tried a pressure washer? It works well on concrete.
