  1. When water gets in the ear, it is  the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungus- its dark, warm and damp. Try to keep water out of your ears. Use earplugs. If your ears not only hurt but itch and flake, with swelling around the ear or pain that radiates down your neck, you definitely have swimmer's ear, aka external otitis, and you should probably see a doctor

  2. NO! Don't mess around with any of these suggestions! Go see a doc. You could end up with a problem that leaves you deaf &/or unable to go back into the water. I destroyed my eardrum in 1973, and It has never been successfully repaired. Both Navy & civilian docs tried. I can't dive anymore, and even snorkleing can create problems. I sometimes surf with a wax ear plug, but that usually gets blown out after one good wipe out. I endure lots of pain & hearing loss. Learn from this.

For all of my life, I have been in the ocean, swimming, surfing, sailing, diving and snorkeling. I have known since about 1975 that I can never dive again. Bad ears can keep you away from the ocean forever. I have been surfing for 42 years. You can afford to take two weeks off to get to a doc and get your ear healed up.

  3. I remember when I was little, I used to go to a camp (which had a lake)

After swimming, the counselers would pour something in out ears to prevent bacteria. I think it was alcohol.

Before you do this, you should look it up on google

  4. Try " Doc Pro Plugs" they trap a small pocket of air in between your ears and the plug and keep your ears warm which also prevents surfers ear.

  5. Hey bro Vanessa is right, its an ear infection! They are the worst, and can be very painful.  I should know I get one a year.  You are much more likely to get one in the summer when the water is warm and bacteria thrive in the water.  Ear plugs will stop it, or you can decrease your chances by washing out your ears right after contact.

Once you get an infection you need to go to the doctor and get these special ear drops, it will stop the pain within hours ussually.

I feel for ya, hope you feel better, one of the worst pains ever.
