I have a 5 hour layover in Mexico City on my way to Matzatlan. Is the Mexico City airport nice? Is there anything to do there for 5 hours? Is there any layover tour of the city?

  1. wait or take a tour around the airport?

  2. The family and I had a four hour layover in Mexico City.  We went outside and looked for the sign with an "M" in a circle. That's the Metro (subway). We got on and went to the Zocalo (the main square). We went into the cathedral, saw the ruins of Templo Mayor (Aztec ruins around the side of the cathedral), bought some souvenirs from peddlers and ate lunch at a department store close by.  Then we took the Metro back to the airport with plenty of time to make our flight.

If it's rush hour (people trying to get to or get home from work) then forget it--it's much too crowded and there maybe pickpockets. When we did it there were like a half dozen people per car.

  3. watch teh planes take off, lol. but seriously same as all other airports im assuming. get some food, maybe buy some souveniers and kill time.

  4. Well, sorry but no, there's nothing to do there just like there's nothing to do in any other airports of the world, except walk around the duty free shops and probably eat something. There are many restaurants you can choose from, and several shops too, but that's about it. You will also find internet terminalls in case you want to kill some time surfing the net. That's about all I can think of, that's what I did during a 5-hr layover in London cuz they didn't have anything to do there either. Definitely, no time to go out of the airport and have a decent tour, even of a small centric area.....

  5. Go watch a bull fight. Just kidding, I've never been to that city.

  6. It is soooooooooo hot there, and always packed.  I go thru there a few times a year and just park my behind in a bar.

  7. Do you find something to do in airports?

  8. There are restaurants and that is it.  There is realtively nothing to do at the Mexico City airport.....and by the way, that airport is a cluster f**k.  To go from international terminal to domestic terminal, you have to walk quite a ways and squeeze through the people.  So you might need the 5 hours to find your gate.  There is a metro stop at the airport, so you can ride the subway into town.  But really, you are not going to have time so dont take the risk.

I have only been to one airport in my life that has "something to do"... Amsterdam Schiphol.  They have a brothel there

  9. The airport is large and comfortable.  You can eat, drink and shop.  Mexico City is a very large and complicated city.  There is no way you can do a tour in that time.

If there is 5 hours between landing time and departing time you really have at the most 4 hours.  If we add the customs and immigration that just leaves you with 3 to 3.5 hours.  It will take you about an hour to go anywhere in Mexico and another hour to go back.  That leaves you, with only one hour of tour.  Believe me it is not worth it.

Hope you enjoy Mazatlan.  If you like big cities, definitely come back to Mexico city.  It will take you at least a good weekend to have a glimpse to it and a good week to do a proper visit.

  10. I live in Mexico, but have never been to that airport...tho many friends have. I don't believe there is anything  special to do there...but do NOT leave the airport...you don't have time enough to make it worthwhile.  Also, I just want to emphasize to you the importance of keeping your carry-on bag PHYSICALLY attatched to you at all times.  Put a strap on it that attatches to your wrist...NEVER set it down beside you if it is not attatched to you.  Also, be sure you keep your passport, money, I.D. Cr. card in a little pouch on a rope or chain around your neck INSIDE your clothing.  Keep a paper copy of your passport in your luggage.  Write your passport number on a separate paper and put that in a totally different place.  I have had friends, experienced travellers, who made the mistake of putting their bag down for a second.  Passport, I.D. and all were in it.  They had no copy of the passport...result was, of course, BIG trouble.  Happened again to a friend just the other day.  If you are in the airport and bored for several hrs, it is very easy to let your guard down for a second.  Be very ,very careful.  I hope you have a great time in Matzatlan.
