Is there anything you can do if your employer gives you different work from what you were hired for?

I work for the a county council and was taken on to do all the admin and booking of people's civil weddings - I did occasional stationary ordering for our office inbetween. Now, due to 're-structures' I have been re-slotted and now sit all day on my own ordering stationary for loads of offices and other general data input. My pay and place of work are the same, but my job is utterly boring, unchallenging and not what I was taken on to do. Is there anything I can do about it / who can I complain to? My manager agrees it's rubbish for me but the decision was taken high up in the council, so guess I just have to leave? (I would have already save for current economic climate meaning there are hardly any about).

  1. my mom had the same problem..she made a fuss over it and they let her go =(  She filed a complaint about it but nothing was ever done. I guess you may have to find a new job if you aren't happy as most places will just find a reason to fire you if you complain.

  2. most job descriptions now include something like this "Miscellaneous duties as assigned," which basically means just about anything they want you to do.

it's always easier to find a new job when you have a job.  so, if you are truly unhappy where you are & there is no hope for change, start looking for something else.

    good luck!

  3. Before too much time passes, get a good evaluation on all your previous duties.  It's not unusual with restructuring that performance evaluations are done.

If you want to take on more task, make it known.  Do your job well, complete and professionally.  Get all your options open and appear flexible.

Jobs never stay the same, they always evolve.  Either develop with them or move on to another employer.  You must be making a positive contribution or you might have been let go.

Get engaged in the company's success..
