  1. From what I understand, those sites are all rigged.  The info is second hand, but a friend of someone I trust completely owns one such site and readily admits that it is rigged.  He's made millions, by the way, very fun to hang out with from what I understand.

  2. This is totally unverifiable, but take it for what it is worth. If poker sites are rigged in any way it is for the rake only. Every day you will see hands in a brick and mortar casino where you see AA against KK against QQ and the QQ wins. Its not rare at all. The frequency you see hands like that or odd looking suck-outs is what seems abnormal to a player. The industry line is that you see more hands than you would in a brick and mortar so you see more suck-outs and seemingly mathematically improbable hands played. The way it was explained to me (from someone that wrote code for a lesser site) was that the frequency of those hands are built in so that bigger pots are played and bigger rakes are taken from the table for the site. So if you believe that I think you can safely say that they are rigged but not toward one particular person, unless you were part of the absolute team that was publicly busted and fined. You can read more about it on the link below.

In conclusion, yes poker sites can be manipulated (rigged)

    10 points please :)

  3. nope. track your hands for a while, and you can see how it evens out.

for example, the accepted winning % of pairs vs over cards is about 12 to 11. Therefore, for every 12 times the pairs win, the overcards win 11. However, this does not mean all 12 of those wins was just the pair standing up. sometimes, the pair hit a 4 card straight or flush, full house, or quads. The same goes for the overcards.

But, in the long run, the pairs will win 12, and the overcards will win 11.

[edit] the action flop theory is interesting, but the simple truth is that if this were true, we wouldn't have a leaderboard: some players can consistently win day in and day out.

There are many ways to disprove this theory, but the easiest is just to play in some cheap or free games, and only play drawing hands, 78 or worse. i did this the other day, and i was getting rewarded left and right with trips, straights, flushes. etc.

also, think about it: what are the possible hands you could have that 2 additional cards could not beat?

    Example:

    AA

    Flop:

    Ah Ad 10s

If somebody is holding the 2d 4d, you can get beat by 3d 5d.

While post-flop, the best hand will _usually_ win, that doesn't mean it will _always_ win.

Another thing too is that the published odds are often mis-quoted. For example, some sources say that AA is better than 80% to win the hand. In actuality, this is only true for AA vs a lower pair or AK or worse. Big pairs stand up around 30% of the time at showdown.

  4. There certainly are some "rigged" sites out there, recently there are some complaints about "Super Users" who can see all the hole cards at the table, and took MILLIONS from the other players over time.

The sites are Abolute Poker, and Ultimate Bet. Both are advertised on TV and have endorsements from some of the major poker player on the WSOP circuit. See the links below.

Also here is a blacklist of sites you should avoid.

As for Pokerstars, I have my suspicions there too, I played there for quite a while, mostly in NL tournaments, and I saw what I suspect were Poker Action Flops, so I quite playing there.

The Poker Action Flop is explained here:
