You need a converter you can buy them online.  They do have free ones but from my experience they didn't work all that well.  I used Cucusoft converter and it was great and one of the cheaper ones.

divx files generally already have an .avi extension, if it's just a file association thing change the extension.

The divx format is lossy, if you convert to another format the quality will suffer even more than when the original file was converted to divx in the first place.

I run Linux so I can't help you with converters.  I know mplayer is cross platform so you could download that.  mplayer is an excellent program but text based.
