Question:

Is there anyway to get out of an expired plates ticket?

I got a warning ticket from a state trooper on a Thursday night for my expired plates, so I go home and park my car. I don't drive until Monday to go to work and pickup my paycheck so I could get my plates registered. Before I could even get to work I get pulled over by a town cop and he gives me a ticket(no fix-it ticket, no warning) after I told him what was going on. Is there anyway to get out of this if I go to court for it?

My car is currently registered within 3 hours of getting the ticket.

  1. You ignored the warning; and hope to get out of the ticket you skated the first time?

    Not happening.

  2. Yes I think you will be excused since the tickets happened over the weekend and you had no options.  Just tell the judge, show him the two tickets and show him that you did renew.  You should be ok.

  3. I don't think you would totally "get out of it", but a lot depends on your prior history, HOW LONG the plates had been expired before they pulled you over, and certainly, your attitude if you present it to a judge.

A brief and meltingly respectful statement is something you can write-

including the fact that you became aware on Thursday, and since your next paycheck was on Monday, that really WAS the first opportunity for you to fix the issue. Of course, the word "apologize" is somewhere in this, and this isn't the day to wear tennis shoes if you are there in person.

MOST judges will be lenient on such things.. you DID get it done. He may not dismiss it.. but he has all options to reduce it to as little $$ as he can.

  4. I think it would depend on the mood of the people you are dealing with. If the people in the court are in a good mood you might get to slide on it as long as you had proof of insurance and had no priors

  5. The court is not going to have much sympathy, because you were warned on Thursday. Had you been on your way to DMV on Friday morning, you could have an argument. However you waited until Monday. Furthermore, the court will argue that you could have made arrangements to go to DMV in a registered vehicle, by having someone take you in their car.

  6. Go to court explain it to the prosecutor show him proof you did it right away (to show that was your intent all along)

and he will most likely just let it go
