  1. You need to buy a TV tuner and install it into your computer (if you don't want to open your computer, you can buy an external USB TV tuner). Look on TigerDirect or Newegg for one. (A TV tuner allows you to hook up your cable, antenna, or VCR to your computer.)  Install the TV tuner as per the directions that came with it. Then, connect the VCR to the TV tuner (same way you connect it to a TV). Now, depending on the brand of TV tuner you have, there are different ways of watching TV or movies on it. Your TV tuner should come with software that allows you to watch TV on your computer. For a Hauppauge TV tuner, open the Hauppauge WinTV program, set the channel to your VCR's default RF channel (usually 3 or 4). If you have Windows XP Media Center Edition or Windows Vista Home Premium/Ultimate, you can also watch TV through Media Center.

You can also capture video from a VHS tape and save it to your computer. Once you have your TV tuner (and the software that came with it) installed, open Windows Movie Maker, click File > Capture Video, select the device that corresponds to your TV tuner, click "Configure", then click "TV Tuner", and then set the channel to the VCR's default RF channel. Click OK and then click Close. Click "Next" in the Video Capture Wizard and follow the steps to capture video.
