Question:

Is there anyway to remove dried stripper from crevices after stain has been applied?

My wife decided she'd jump the gun and begin applying stain to our chairs before the stripper was fully removed from all the crevices. I was looking for advice on what to do, and am contemplating using steel wool / brushes to remove the junk from the crevices. Any ideas?

  1. steel wool works the best you can use a plastic not wire brush but remember when the stripper comes off  there will be no stain on the piece

  2. Apply some stripper to these areas and use toothpicks, dental tools, old toothbrush. Stay away from wire brushes since they will scratch the wood. You can use steel wool but make sure all the little steel particles are cleaned off with denatured alcohol or mineral spirits. I usually "wash" the piece with either one of these when I am done and then use a tack cloth.

  3. The dried stripper will prevent the stain from penetrating the wood & leave uneven patches as well  as making it harder to finish.

Only way around it is to strip the piece again. &  remove the old stuff.

Old tooth brushes, toothpicks , & cheap paintbrushes w/ the bristles

cut down to about an inch long to work it out  of cracks.

If there are spindles a piece of yarn turned around the spindle once & worked back & forth works well..

    Best regards

  4. You're exactly right to use brushes, but also use a solvent such as lacquer thinner to help. You will have to restain though.
