I got a bigger hard drive, but it has no OS on it, and I dont want to pay $300 for Windows Vista again... is there anyway, hopefully cheap or free, to transfer my Vista from my old hard drive to the new one?

I need step by step instructions please! Thank you.

  1. You probably need to go to a computer shop that offers data transfer, or better yet, ask them if they can put the new hard drive into an empty slot if there is one

  2. Get DriveImage XML from here http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.ht... It's free.

Put you new hard drive in as your D Drive (slave) and then you can use the program to create an image of your C drive. You can us the "Drive to Drive" method. Then you will have an exact copy of your original drive and you can put your new drive in as C drive.

  3. I use Norton Ghost, but try the manufacturer of your new hdd's web site and see what they offer.  there are plenty of them out there, to image one disk to another.

  4. you will have to disk image your current hard drive (make a clone) and copy it to an external HDD.

you will then have to put your new hard drive into your computer and then clone the disk image from the external HDD to your new hard drive.

You don't need to get an external HDD if your computer can have two hard drives in it at once.

Google "disk imaging software" and you'll get many programs to do it.
