Is there anywhere you can rent professional cameras?

I've started doing some senior pictures and things for free to build a portfolio.

I have a crappy little camera but the pictures turn out pretty good.

I dont feel that I can start charging until I have a professional camera of some sort.

I've checked rent a center, but is there anywhere I can rent a good camera?

  1. There is no such of thing as a professional camera.  Professional is what you call a photographer, not the camera.

I would get an inexpensive 120 camera, not a Holga, something like a 645, which several companies make, and shoot with one of those.  A 6x6 with either a 105mm or 135mm lens will do a good job.  If you want to use a 35mm, and you certainly can, I would get a 135mm lens and shoot with that, but you can use a 105 which some photographers prefer.  Lighting will be your biggest problem.  Renting lighting is far better than renting cameras.

  2. If you live in a major market, there should be a professional camera store that rents equipment ... be prepared to use a credit card or post a deposit equal to the value of the equipment you rent

  3. In your home state there is a film office, which is a clearing house for film/video productions. Our company is listed under rental lights, cameras, stands, speakers, screens, monitors, etc. Search under film office, state of interest. Another tack is rentals, cameras, etc.
