Is there asbestos on brake linings of trains?

There certainly is asbestos in car brakes, but I don't think there is on trains because they can't use as much friction as rubber-tired vehicles on blacktop. The friction of steel wheels on steel rails, even with sand for traction, is not very high.

Dirtydog is right on.  Todays composition shoes no-longer use asbestos.  Well done.

Asbestos  is no longer found in railroad brake shoes..I am guessing it was last used in the mind 70's.  Railroads now use several different types of shoes, some are cast steel but most are composite compounds.

Braking is controlled by the traction motors and the sanding of the tracks for traction. Compressed air operate the safety brakes, which could be metal on metal anymore.
