  1. yes

  2. Yes, most Taekwondo / Karate styles start out with a white belt and then go to yellow, then something like green or blue, then brown or red, then black.  It varies by the style of Taekwondo or Karate you are taking and by individual instructors preference, but usually from 3-5 years to black belt.

  3. Yep, there's belts, sparring, katas....and in TKD there's sometimes more board-breaking than karate (depends on the dojang/dojo)

Don't worry about the belts though--just focus on perfecting your skill. Better to be a very good white-belt than a bad black-belt

  4. Yes, Taekwondo and karate share a very similar ranking system.

  5. Most karate 'empty-hand' fighting styles have belts, especially in the United States, the U.K., and Australia. Many foreign martial arts instructors had to create belt systems in order to attract potential students. Don't think of a belt as proof of how tough someone is. A white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be a 'black belt' of making an unskilled brawler tap out.

  6. Yes,

You earn your way up the Belt system from white belt to Black Belt.

Depending on the program the belts in between can be Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Red and then Black.
