Is there competitive underwater swimming?

Question

I was wondering if there was an event in the sport of swimming where the competitors swim one or two lengths of the pool completely underwater? Would that not make for a viable competitive swimming event?

Not anymore. but until 1912 it was an Olympic sport. there was also a swimming obstacle race where they swam under boats, climbed over things under and over docks etc. weird stuff.

Actually all of these answers are incorrect. There are competitive underwater swimming events as well as world championships and records. The sport is called Dynamic Apnea and the events include both with and without fins. I've seen a lady (55+ year old Russian woman) go over 200 meters (LC) underwater before surfacing to claim last years championship and the current world record...this is just insane.
