Is there corrective eye surgery for floaters? The ones I have seem to be getting larger. I have astigmatism.?

  1. I get floaters and I just had a thorough eye exam and the eye MD told me there is really nothing you can do for floaters and they are nothing to worry about. I don't think astigmatism is related to floaters. Get a good eye exam if you haven't had one.

Yes, there is surgery to remove floaters.  It is called a vitrectomy.  It is invasive and of course there is some risk, but it has about a 98% success rate.  It must be performed by a retinal specialist but not all of them will do it.  It involves removing the vitreous from your eye and replacing it with a saline solution which your eye rapidly replaces with its own clear aqueous fluid.  The surgery itself has been around for almost 40 years but only recently used to treat severe cases of floaters.  See the below links to learn more.

  3. If you have noticed them getting larger I would have a thorough eye exam done by an Ophthalmologist. There is not a surgery to correct that unless there is blood in the eye, and that is a rather invasive surgery. Astigmatism would not affect the floaters as that is the shape of the outside of the cornea.
