  1. PR is an american territory.

  2. There are no customs and immigration controls between the island and the United States with the exception of the FDA Agricultural Check in San Juan before you return to the states.  Your bags must be placed on a scanner and x-rayed to make sure you are not bringing an plans or animals back to the mainland that will affect agriculture there. Once scanned, an orange sticker with the map of Puerto Rico and the words "inspected" are placed on your bags. You must do this before checking in with your airline or your bags will not be taken by the luggage handlers and loaded onto the airplane.

You must have a valid state ID, driver's license of passport to travel by air to/from and within the United States.  Not having a valid identification will raised flags at the airport and you can be prevented from boarding your flight.

Finally, there are sometimes random checks of residency/citizenship at the boarding gates by immigration officials. On my return to New York in December three agents from Customs and Border Patrol were checking IDs, passports and visas (for some foreigners) before the boarded. This is done because Puerto Rico has become a new entry point for illegal aliens who cross illegally from the neighboring Dominican Republic or aboard ships that smuggle people for a profit.  Once they arrive in Puerto Rico, they don't need a passport to fly to the United States since in the past a driver's license was sufficient to fly between the mainland and the island. Once again these checks are random, but one should always be prepared just in case.

  3. You do not need a passport or visa; Puerto Rico is an American Commonwealth.

As long as you are an American citizen, you can travel to and from Puerto Rico w/o  going through customs or immigration.

  4. No. You don't need a passport, there isn't customs for people coming from the US.. AS LONG AS YOU ARE A US CITIZEN. This is very important because non-citizens think they can go to the US and come here without passports and that's not the case. You should definitely bring a DL, the airport will want to see that (as with all domestic flights) and in case anything happens here.

  5. no you dont need a passport because puerto rico is owned by the USA
