  1. Not usually, but you might be able to con a free drink from a friendly fellow cruiser.  If you go to the Welcome Aboard reception, you can usually grab a free glass of champagne.

At the ports of call, usually the rules are pretty lax, and it's easy for anyone to get really drunk on shore.

  2. If you are sailing from the US, you  have to be 21 years old to be able to buy alcoholic drinks and I believe even sailing outside of the US, if the ship is US owned, (It doesn't matter where the ship is registered or where it sails from) you still need to be 21.

You will only get proper free drinks on a cruise ship at the Captains party, which is only held once on each cruise or at the members party if you have cruised with that particular cruise line before.

  3. Celebrity usually greets you with a glass of champagne as you come onboard.

Most lines have a captains reception on the first formal night. Some offer champagne only, while others offer a selection of mixed drinks, wine, and beer.

Most lines have a reception for past pax where free alcohol is served. There is generally less selection than at the captain's reception.

Many lines offer a liquor tasting outside the ship shops on the first night at sea.

Many lines offer free champagne at one or more of the art auctions. They will announce which ones.

Costa usually offers a free split of champagne in the main dining room on the last formal night.

Several lines reward people with champagne that participate in the shipboard entertainment, usually evening shows in the theater. It's never guaranteed and usually involves some sort of humiliating activity that is captured on video tape and broadcast over the cabin television.

Now for the bad news. Many lines enforce a B-21 policy even in international waters. See the link below for the policies by line:

  4. You normally won't find free liquor on cruise ships.  Oh, maybe a glass of wine at one or two dinners, but usually anytime you order a drink it will be put on your tab.  Smooth sailing!!

  5. YES, there is one occasion on cruise ships when passengers are given free drinks.  All of the cruise lines have frequent cruisers clubs, like the Crown and Anchor Society on Royal Caribbean, the Lattitudes on NCL, and the Captains Club on Princess.  Whenever you are a member of these clubs one of the benefits is on each cruise there is a get together for members only and they serve free drinks.  The drinks are generally everything from champaign, beer, wine, rum punch and maybe a couple other mixed drinks.  But at the affairs there is finger food and you can have as many drinks as you want while it is going on.  The last cruise we were on we went to a Lattitudes affairs and I have 4 free glasses of wine.

NO, at age 18 you cannot drink on a cruise even after it leaves the US, except that on some cruises your parents can sign a waiver for you to have beer or wine with dinner.  You should go to the web site for the cruise line that you are going on and look at their policy for alcoholic beverages.

  6. Since it's in American waters, you have to be 21.

    It's not free.

Once you get to international waters, you have to be 18.
