Is there going to be a Lunar event soon on the 27th of august at 12:10am? I got the information from an email and the same thing happened last year and it turned into being a prank!

In the emails it says that mars is suppose to be visible next to the moon on the 27th of august at midnight!

Is it a prank or is it real?

  1. Ya it is true. You can have detailed information at the following nasa's official site http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/LEmono/TLE2...

  2. real

  3. Hi Jackson!

I'm afraid none of it is true.  It's a spam e-mail hoax making the rounds, as it does every year about this time.

Here's what happened.  In August 2003, Mars in its orbit came a little closer to earth than it usually does. Astronomers wrote about this, pointing out that if you looked at Mars in a good telescope you could resolve the Red Planet into a viewable disc.  If the telescope were powerful enough, the disc might look almost the size of the moon, in the telescope.

Hoaxsters went to town.  Leaving out the part about the telescope, they saturated cyberspace with claims that Mars would be as big as the full moon, that nothing like this could ever be seen again, and the like, and then laughed their heads off as the spam recipients deluged sites like this with questions about how to see the "two moons."

For the hoax artists, fun like this was too good to be shelved after only one year.  Now, the "two moons" hoax is repeated annually in August even though, according to the original claim, "nothing like this will ever be seen again."

I'm sure that thousands of hoax recipients will be out after midnight on August the 27th (the hoax e-mail is not clear whether you should look on the night of August 26-27, or of August 27-28).  They will all be keenly disappointed.

Neither Mars nor the moon can be seen anytime around midnight on either date.  The moon is not full on August 27.  It is near the end of its waning crescent phase.   A thin crescent moon will rise sometime after 2 a.m. (Daylight Saving Time).

As for Mars, it has already vanished into the evening twilight for Northern Hemisphere observers this month.  Those out craning their necks after midnight will never find their two moons.  They will see none.

  4. If this is at all true !?! ... Might I still suggest that many should  rather.. Or still look at your local news stations in hopes of hearing/seeing some reminder of this !!?!! I'm all for ANY&EVERYONE seeing something that would be able to be seen with the naked eye!?! or even binoculars to atleast try to view said events .. the best you can !!.. My enemy is almost always clouds !?!  ;-`{ uh`mm when trying to see wonderful things, objects, goings ons that can be seen from Earth without the aid of something !! such as a rainbow!?!.G/L~!!! r R r

  5. This is an email hoax which has been circulating since August 2003, when Mars was at its closest and very bright, but nowhere near as big and bright as the Moon. That just is impossible. Currently Mars is rapidly fading in brightness as it gets ready to pass behind the Sun; it is very far away, and hard to see unless you have a good western horizon and know exactly where to look.
