  1. The money is adequate but for the amount of long hours you put in, in my opinion it is not worth it. Plus when they run advertisement specials you sell more cars but your margin of profit is smaller because most of it is tied up in advertising. Another aggravating thing to put up with is sales managers/credit officers. The company demands a lot out of them and so they do not want to turn anybody down no matter what. So the pressure is on you to get the buyer to  sign on the dotted line with a larger down payment or a co-signer or in some cases both. Plus you must not only sell a car and take care of all the stips, you will be under pressure to make sure the buyer gets adequate amounts of auto insurance. Selling cars like a good old boy with a loud voice and a cigar in his mouth is over. Most savvy folks use the internet to get a discount and can save a ton of money, but once again your commission is lowered due to instant automated websites and you become a simple signature getter. Of course if you fail to make the sale it is always your fault. If you like long hours, stale coffee, crazy people, and low pay then by all means go for it.

  2. In today's economy car sales is iffy at best. If you are in a city that isn't feeling the crunch it may not be bad but there will be dry spells. It also depends on the deal. Since you are new to the business you won't get a top deal. I have no idea how they pay now because it has been almost 20 years since I was in it, but back then one could make fair money. I started selling cars in the '60's during the "muscle car era". Sales were out of this world, but the prices weren't very high then and you could live on less than now. In '67 and '68 I was making $300 to $400 a month, that's about like making 3 to 4,000 a month now. Twenty years ago when I left the business I was lucky to make a grand a month, because sales were down then also.

If you are not a natural, you can starve in that line of work. Try to find something else if you can, but go ahead and try it, just keep looking.

  3. Sales are way down in the auto industry right now and will be as long as fuel prices are high.  So I would say NO, there isn't good money in it, especially right now.

Besides that, being a good salesperson is just that...you have to be a good salesperson!  Not only do you need to be able to get them to sign on the dotted line, you need to be able to build a network so that when someone buys a car from you they will come back to YOU in 5 years.  That's the key to long term success.

In my opinion, either you got it or you don't.  If you do, you'll do fine.

    Good luck!

  4. Even in this economy people will need and buy cars and yes, you can make good money at the right dealership.  It's long hours, hard work and will require you to put in some time before making good money.  They will not just let you on the floor to the sell it by yourself without help for sometime.

  5. You can make money selling cars but like anything else, you have to work hard. Your hours will be long usually from 9-9 at least 6 days per week and usually you are on a commision only with a draw paid weekly against your commissions. If you work hard, you should make money, I would say anywhere between $25,000 to apx. $50,000 per year for your first year. But you have to work hard, push the sale, get people in to the dealership on your own, (give out business cards and fliers everywhere you go) and stay with it.
