Barbie's Roots:

The real Barbie (yes, there was one) was the daughter of Ruth and Eliot Handler, who founded Mattel after World War II. The idea for the teenage fashion doll came to Ruth when she noticed that Barbie preferred paying with shapely paper dolls to playing with baby dolls. The Handlers gambled that other modern  girls would feel the same  way. The Handlers had a son, too, named Ken.

no i think i read about some lady named ruth or sumthin and her daughter's named was barbara and so she made the doll and named it after her daughter!   =)

Ruth was the designer.  She saw a doll in France for young girls and designed a doll for the U.S. market.

Barbie and I were born the same day,  March 9, 1959.
