  1. The short answer is yes.

    Knowledge process is the new term for growth simulation.  Plant/animal growth simulation/modeling packages were developed for many significant agricultural crops and systems starting back in the 1930's with major increases in activity with first the introduction of mainframe computers then the introduction of desktops.  Many of the original equations were little more than regression equations developed from yields generated by fertilizer experiments (We had a Nitrogen rate and crop yields from it).  These equations obviously explained the experimental results much better than they predicted future yield (Rainfall/weather is such a huge influence on crop production).  The process continues today with many of the former academic models now being used by government to predict production and industry to predict demand.

    Some programs (EPIC comes to mind) have left the agricultural field and become involved with environmental services.
