Question:

Is there life after JV?

I joined my school volleyball team, and I'm only on Varsity because I'm a senior and I guess that the coach is too soft to make any cuts.

So I was an alright player on JV, but now that I'm on Varsity, I'm miserable. I never get to to anything. I just spent practice on the side the whole time, and this coach seems to have little desire to even learn my name.

I went out for volleyball because it was fun even if I'm not all that good in the least. But I can't go on JV since I'm too old. I know that he just wants me off the team so bad so he can bring up a tall girl or something.

I just spent a whole practice doing absolutely nothing!

God, he could at least let me practice on the wall or condition with some laps or SOMETHING.

But I really do like playing volleyball, so I refuse to quit even if I can't spike or overhand serve. (5'1 w/ a low jump)

AS FOR MY QUESTION: Is there a way I can play volleyball FOR FUN after I graduate? Or is it all just hopeless for me? BTW, I live in Miami.

  1. Volleyball gets BETTER after you graduate high school.  18-30 are the best years for playing, and the most fun, in my opinion.  If you are going to college, there are usually intramural teams which you can play on, and they're a lot of fun.  Other things you can check on are local clubs, or even Rec nights at the YMCA or other gym.  There are lots of players in Florida, and all levels of play (from Beginner to Professional).  Call the various gyms around there, and see what nights they have people playing volleyball.  Look for clubs as well, and many times there are leagues that play that are looking to pick up an extra player.  Just make sure that you don't say you're better than you are...play in the level you want to play in...otherwise you'll be sitting out and not having any fun.  In Miami there are lots of people playing all over.  You can even hit the beaches, find the permanent nets, and ask someone or just watch when groups of people that match your skill level tend to get together to play.  And all these people just want to get together and have a good time, and try to get a little better.  You shouldn't have a problem if you just get out and search a little.

  2. I agree with the above answer.  YMCA is a great place to start.  College intramurals is great if you are going to college.  And you can find an adult team to play that is really interested in fun and then winning.  I went to the USA Volleyball region for Miami.  Contact Charlie Purkiser at charlie@usavFL.org to find adult teams in your area.  Since you are just 18, you can still play juniors club volleyball.  Contact Yvonne Devlin at yvonne@usavFL.org to find a juniors club.
