I've been having the biggest debate on this subject..

more stars.. or more dirt?

I told my friend, do you know how many stars there are in the universe? And he told me, do you know how much dirt I sweep everyday?

So yeah... I wanna know the true answer.

  1. what a quality question! how are you defining dirt? is a piece of litter a piece of dirt?  or do you mean soil? and then if it's wet and has clumped together then is it just one big bit or still hundreds of little bits of dirt?!

anyway there are at least 100 billion galaxies with 100 billion stars in each. the combined mass is obviously greater than that of the dirt so you must mean are there more pieces of dirt than 10000 billion billion?

shall we say a speck of dust weighs a millionth of a gram? probably a LOT more but we'll play safe. that would mean there has to be 10 million billion kilograms of dirt on the earth.

that's a 1 with 16 zeros after it. now the earth weighs 60 million times that so the question becomes, is the earth one in 60 million parts dirt? and the answer is meaningless and pointless just like the question!

  2. One galaxy = Billions of Stars

and there are about 100 billion observable galaxies.

Lets say one galaxy has about 50 billion stars. Multiply 50 bill. with 100 bill.. The observable Universe has about 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 OR

    5.0 × 10 to the 21

I would guess that there are not that many sand on earth than Stars!

  3. What do you consider 'dirt'? Only sand off a beach? Or would you include other forms, like ash from a volcano?

If you mean grains of sand off all the world's beaches, then yes there are more stars in the known universe than sand on Earth.

  4. i have heard scientists say there are more stars than grains of sands on every beach on earth.

  5. I think that it's totally dirt!!!! Oh and please pick me for best answer because i really need it.

  6. Well, I am going to tell you that you probably need to start wringing your hands and jumping up and down because no one knows the correct answer...

In our gallaxy, the Milky Way, there are more than 200 Billion Stars.

Outside of our Galaxy in deep space are thousands and thousands of other galaxies which EACH contain billions of stars...

    Now, consider this...

Our star, the Sun contains 99 percernt of all of the MASS within our Solar System. So, if you, a resident of Earth, think that the Earth is BIG...think again. It is only a very small part of the left over one percent that makes up all of MASS of the other planets and moons within our Solar System. That is mind boggling. On top of that, there are billions and billions and billions of other stars out there which probably have their own solar systems too...WOW. That is a lot of stuff.

So, your answer is correct. There are more stars than the dirt your friend sweeps each day.

  7. That would depend on your definition and unit of dirt.

Carl Sagan once said, "The total number of stars in the Universe is larger than all the grains of sand on all the beaches of the planet Earth."

  8. The Universe is expanding more and more everyday, which means about a billion new stars are formed every second.

    There's your answer.

  9. Since not every celestial body may have dirt. Dirt must be finite in amount. There is an infinite number of stars.

Still the argument could be made that your would always find more dirt. I'll say "Stars"

  10. stars no doubt

  11. dirt because the EArth is dirt plus mars and all the other planets if were only going by stainds of dirt then dirt buy far

  12. In the universe, millions of stars and dirts are there. If you look up the sky at night, you can see some of them. The star that you see at night are the stars nearer the earth, but the star, which is much nearer to earth, is the SUN.

  13. there are many more stars. new stars form every second. there are about 400 billion stars in the milky way, and there are billions of galaxies in the visible universe.

so yes, there are a lot more stars than dirt on earth. there are probably more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of the world.

  14. That's a great question to ponder. But I think Stars. There must be trillions of gains of dirt and sand on earth. But a typical galaxy can contain 100 billion stars and there are hundreds of billions of galaxies.

  15. It is said that there are more stars than there are grains of sand on all the world's beaches. That's an awful lot of stars, and each one weighs much more than the entire Earth. Clearly, there are more stars than there is dirt.

  16. There are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on a beach.  Hope that helps.
