  1. Not really, but you have to be dedicated to even get into graduate school.  And you have to want to work hard and do research.  And you will probably have to travel a lot.  So if you want to stay close to someone, this isn't the field for you.

  2. HA! Is there ever. Even in grad school I had fellow students fighting over internships, assistantships, thesis advisors and homework answers!!! Sure some colleagues work together, but a lot of them don't. And don't even get me started on the job market!!! Museum jobs are notoriously competitive as well as full time state and park  archaeology positions. What about academic positions you ask??? HA! Anthropology, as well as many other academic fields, is very competitive. It's all about who has the newest theory and who wrote the newest article and presented it at AAA. But hey, what's life without a little healthy competition??

  3. Depends - there is a lot of cooperation in research, shairng of data and results - to a point.  Unfortuantley the reality is that funding opportunities are often limited and you will find times when competition for funding or positions can create issues.

I have seen both sides of the coin.
