I plan on going in July, but I like a rustic atmosphere, and it appears that it may not be like that in Cancun....I love Negril, Jamaica....now I know it won't be like Negril, but I'm just wondering what it's like...

  1. The city of Cancun is not very old- 35 years +/-. It's original name was Benito Juarez and the Mexican Presidential palace was once on what is now known as the hotel zone (where the Royal Sands is now). The locals were mostly farmers and fishermen and are Maya which most of the Yucatan is.

The hotel zone is not rustic it is commercial! Most of the hotels received damag or were totally destroyed during hurricane Wilma of 2005. The hotels took the insurance money and made everything bigger and better (sic).

There are some palm trees planted in front of some hotels on the beach. Before Wilma (hurricane 2005) there were much more. Cancun has a beautiful white sand beach that never gets hot . And the water is always warm with 7-layers of turquoise color.

Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos just south of Cancun have beautiful palms all bent and twisted (like the photos).

If you want more rustic you will need to take a trip out of town to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or even to Merida.

    Hope this helps!
