This Sat we had a first time heifer drop her calf. No complications, but the baby was down in the far end of our bottom pasture. After a few hours the moma was not bringing the baby up and with the heat. We decided that we should bring them both up. Luckly she is a tame cow. So the duty is up to me bring them both up. So... I had to pick up the calf. Wonderful thing about calves.... they fear nothin. It was not that easy to carry a 65lbs calf 200 yards.

Now here is the question. Realy. Is there anything cuter than a newborn herford calf?

I have had foals, kittens, puppy, etc.

I think there is nothing cuter than a newborn herford calf.

Whachy'all think?

  1. There is more innocence and helplessness in their faces than most.  Just looking at them stirs something inside that is hard to describe...love and protectiveness and maternity or paternity, they are as cute as it gets!

  2. i half agree with you. I think that herford calf are extremely adorable. But new born baby lambs are also extremely cute and i just couldn't decide between the two, I've also assisted ewes in birth more then cows. I also think baby donkeys are very cute, not quite as much as calves or lambs, But baby donkeys are all ears ans legs so who cant help but falling in love with them!!!

  3. Hereford calves...

Best memory of a Hereford calf was about 10 years ago (I can tell you are looking for a story by your question) working for Homer, and he kept his springers in a close to home pasture, locked them up at night.  Well, I got done windrowing and he brought me out a beer and we went back to his home place and threw a little grain at the springers to save us getting them.  Well, we could tell the lead cow, Molly, had calved.  Smart old girl had baby hidden.  So we take in his old farm truck and go out and walk on foot looking for the calf.  Sure enough, little bugger was laying all flat like a fawn, the white face gave him away.  I destracted the calf and Homer came up from behind and caught the little rascal, all get up and go!  He had his colosterum!  Get back to the pickup, and typical farmer, the box was full of "stuff" so we put the calf in the cab, head pointed towards me.  Everything is going good, until the calf stands up and takes a gooey first calf p**p on Homer's shoulder.  We only have a half mile to go, he's grabbing tissue paper, trying to catch it, I'm trying not to laugh because he was a neat freak, and this calf has this taffy hanging out.  We're heading up the driveway and smart mama starts talking.  Then the little fella really starts tearing it up, I'm trying not to let him jump out of the passenger window, Homer is trying to drive a stick shift with a loose gear pattern, calf is smearing the taffy on the seat cover....you get my meaning!  Anyway, we get the calf out, the sun was low, and I tell you what, that little fella with his brand new sparkley clean hooves, fuzzy ears, melt in your mouth brown eyes, white face and legs (no 4-H grand champion will ever be as clean as a newborn) and that smell only a newborn calf has was so cool!  We put him in the pen, leaned on the gate and left him wagging his tail at Molly.  I drove home having a good day.

In my opinion, newborn cats and puppies are no fun until they open their eyes.  I still like to watch a foal on wobbly legs get his first drink though.

  4. It's them big ole eyes that do it...so full of wonder and trust...

    Fawns run a close second...

But calves have to win...just because they grow into something....just not cute or attractive at all.

*ever take a close look at roping steers?*  Those are some homely looking critters...but they started out cuter than heck.

  5. on cows we had a jersey lowline calf he was such a cutie

but i think miniture horse foals are the cutest, there smaller than my dog when they sre first born

  6. I adored "NORMAN" in the movie city slickers, he was the cutest calf I had ever seen and wanted one when i saw the movie.

  7. I think all baby animals are cute.

  8. baby PENGUINS!!!

  9. Hmmm...my husband would definitely agree with you.  He just bought four young heifers and their calves....all Herefords.  I grew up on a ranch in Nebraska where BLACK was the only color for cattle, but I'm learning to like these red and white ones.  Thanks for sharing!

  10. no they're pretty adorable...although baby goats playing is pretty cute and mini foals...but calves are right up there..especially Brahman calves...they are so cute, we had a few not too long ago

  11. I have always wanted to raise a calf...not to eat...I spent two weeks on a farm in New York where they raised calves, meaning they fed them the milk not the mamas.  Loved it, could convince my mom to bring Bertha back on the plane with us.  Still may do it one day, need to do research on feeding, and whatever else they need.  There they grew their own feed and they didn't have to water it, that part fascinated the heck out of me.  Baby calves are the cutest, those big brown eyes...Just don't let them suck on your fingers, one nearly sucked the skin right off my finger LOL

  12. I agree the little heads on the Herfords and smaller ears are what makes the big eyes and big nose appear almost human like, rounder and cuter than the milk cattle such as Jersey, Holstein, Guernsey.

  13. I think all the calves are cute. there's a field just below where my horses are and they always put the young ones in there -  I love it when they canter along the fence after the horses then they start bucking and looking so surprised at what they did !

  14. My close freind has1 black angus calf and 2 other red and white calves maybe ayrshire? anyways she is like a little..okay like a big dog she has to be bottle fed so she is very very tame and will follow me around the pasture l*****g my legs when ever i stop she's so cute of course i don't mind the slobber!!

anyways the other two calves ARE adorable, but they are SO scared of people..so they are going to beef them and keep "Boo" the black angus as a pasture pet along with there horses and maybe get milk from her and such

she is very young not fully weaned, and she has the biggest prettiest brown/black eyes with the longest lashes ever! i think at that age they are a hundred times cuter than any other animal..i've seen my fair share of newborn and baby kittens, puppies, deer, and horses...which come to a close second in cuteness!

Boo is the cutest thing on this earth..well maybe besides your new calf =)

  15. I know...aren't they darlin?

Lambs are cute too, but I think calves are cuter...It must be  those great big eyes.

  16. Oh I totally agree, I mean I LOVE Foals, but I have a picture I keep of a newborn, I mean, I got there right after the birth, The birth sac, and after birth were still on the ground.  and when they are new born you can do anything, a few days later if they aren't handled though good luck.  haha  I use to love to go out in the field with all the angus cows, just walk around, watch the babies, I remember when there was an orfan bull I named little foot, honery little thing but I use to sit in his pen and just stroke him.  Rammed me a few good times, but he was much when he was little.

This was my favorite guy right here, I don't know how color got bred into the herd cause all those cows were solid black or brown, but I named this little guy Bullzeye

er. h/o, gotta move the pic to Flickr

    EDIT:::Heres Bullzeye

  17. I love all baby animals! I just want to send a friendly reminder to everybody! DO NOT BUY WILD OR EXOTIC ANIMALS!!! They will not get the proper feeding and learning experiences as they would in the wild and it will mess up theyre life!! THANKS!!!
