  1. There are thousands, depending on which race you're talking about.

There are the Greek, Mayan, Chinese, I-forgot-what, heaps. You've just adopted one version, which says there are 12. But anyone can make a new constellation.

As for you not feeling you "belong", really, they're quite hypothetical.

Heck, you could be the Big Dipper!

  2. I too have heard of this 13 zodiac sign and have found that it is not counted as an  astrological sign.

Although Ophiuchus intersects the ecliptic, it is not a zodiacal sign in astrology. The signs are defined as 30-degree segments of the ecliptic, of which there are only twelve, and they are named after nearby constellations at the time the system was developed, rather than being defined by the constellations.

And as far as you not belonging to your Zodiac sign, they simply say that you are a Capricorn born under a Sagittarius moon, sun or whatever.

  3. Well there are more then 12 constellation but I assume that you are talking about the ones on the ecliptic. The ones on the ecliptic include the 12 regular zodiac signs but there is actually a 13 constellation on the elliptic. It is called Ophiuchus which means "serpent-holder". It is between Scorpius and Sagittarius.

  4. The IAU has officially designated 88 constellations, in 1930- no gaps, clearly defined borders, etc. projected onto the sky's co-ordinate system like country borders, latitude and longitude on Earth.  All objects within the boundaries of a constellation "belong" to the constellation.  The zodiac is defined as a 16 degree-wide band, centred on the ecliptic (the sun's apparent path through the sky, caused by the Earth's annual revolution around the sun).  13 constellations include a part of the ecliptic within their boundary (the commonly- known 12, plus Ophiuchus).  In addition, there is a section of Cetus which lies so close to the ecliptic that a small part of the sun's disc lies in Cetus for a brief period of time each year.  Several more constellations include parts of the zodiac within their borders, but not the ecliptic.  So which constellation do you belong to?  Well, since the constellation boundaries are projected onto the sky, with you as the observer at the centre of an imaginary celestial sphere, you don't belong to any.

  5. You are wrong with both answers. There are actually 88 that are recognised in the western civilisation. However, the Chinese have their own set of pretty patterns in the sky, as do Eskimo's and Aboriginals.

You see a constellation is a line of sight grouping of stars for navigational purposes. As for signs of the Zodiac, there are twelve of these however, there are actually thirteen that travel along the ecliptic where the signs of the zodiac are found. Please note here though that Astrology is no more real than the tooth fairy. A star that is a couple of hundred of light years away has no bearing on your future whatsoever.

If anyone you or anyone you know believes in such gibberish they are clearly deluded.

  6. yeah, the 12 there are just part of the zodiac - in western mythology. in reality there are more constellations. infact there are 88 considered modern constellations.

  7. There are 88 constellations officially recognized by the International Astronomical Union. 13 of these fall along the ecliptic, the path which the Sun follows through the sky. This differs from the 12 zodiac constellations used by astrology, Ophiuchus being the missing constellation.

  8. There are 88 defined constellations, in modern times, in Western civilization.  Historically different cultures recognized different constellations.  You probably are referring to constellations of the zodiac.  In Astrology there are 12 "houses" which refer to constellations of the zodiac (defined as constellation which have the plane of the ecliptic passing through them.)  There are 13 modern constellations which the ecliptic passes through.  Ophiuchus is not recognized as a zodiac "house" by Astrologers.  "Houses" of the zodiac are only loosely based on the astronomy.  For a better explanation of the astrology part of this go to an astrology site, as this one is for science.
