Is there really a desert in Illinois?

I have heard some Illinoisians mention a small desert region in Illinois where cactus does grow. Everytime I ask questions about it, they clam up like I was interupting something. I have been searching on the internet for info about it but I guess I have stumbled on a fairy tale or a closely guarded secret.

Anybody ever hear of it or know where it might be.. Or can tell me if it's an urban legend.....?

I think it is an urban legend.  Having said that, cactus will probably live if planted in Illinois.  It may not thrive, but survive it might.
