  1. Yes, there is. One of my great uncles was a Legionnaire in the French Foreign Legion and I've been trying to find some information on his regimental life, but so far no luck.

The purpose of the Legion was primarily to protect French interests of course, and at first the legionnaires were mainly deployed in the Middle East and Algeria, but later they got to take part in missions all over the world.

There's a lot of mystery and legends around the Legion, the most popular being that it's composed of people with a past or a problem with the authorities in their home countries. It's certainly different from any regular army in that the Legion is made up of foreign volunteers from all over the globe.

  2. Now these are the true desert warriors.

  4. there  was a french foreign legion before wwII they mainlly served in the middle east and vetinam I think they were disbanded after their war in vetinam. before the USA got into vetinam I maybe wrong. they were composed of men from all different countries but under French control it was a hard life they fought to control the french  possesions in occupied countries

  5. Yes there is and it is to provide a military presence in occupied territory or in colonies.

Its not use as a specific service any more because we have military bases everywhere, but essentially, that is what it was.

When you would join the foreign legion, you would be permanently stationed somewhere such as the French had a colony in Senegal

  6. The French Foreign Legion is a military unit within the French Army.  It was established in 1830 and is mainly composed of non-French soldiers and French officers.

Originally, the legion served in France's colonies and were forbidden by French law to deploy inside France.  The law was changed during the First World War, as the legion was needed in the trenches of the western front.

The legion continues its role as France's colonial military force.  They served in the war in Indochina, leading to the myth that all French troops in Vietnam were foreigners.

  7. no it's composed of crooks in the gov't - perhaps maybe yes...but it's purpose is to serve the European likings

  8. France has one since their own soldiers are notorious for losing.
