  1. If you do find one, be sure to read the fine print and terms and conditions of use - free is rarely truly free - especially when talking about phone-phone, or PC-phone (PSTN-PSTN or PC-PSTN).  There is usually strings attached, or it is usually a marketing ploy to drum up business.  Skype originally offered free calls to PSTN phones - but, not anymore, now that they are well known.  That is common marketing practice - free today doesn't mean free tomorrow...

The closest you can get to free long distance calling is to sign-up with VoIP services that offer free "in-network" calling.  Free In-Network Calling means you can call free to other account holders of the service.  So, if you have family, friends, or business partners in Philippines, have them sign up with the same service you have and then you can call each other for free.

InPhonex and CallCentric are two companies that offer truely free In-Network calling.  Their service is free to sign-up, no money up front, no credit card numbers to give up-front and they offer free calling and Faxing to other free account holders.  And you can do it to the Philippines too.

But, they are not the only companies that offer free "in-network" calling - actually there are many - but not all offer free with no money up front.  Some services require obligations and commitments (so read the fine print).

I have more information on this subject on my web site (link is in my profile).

  2. Really truly free? Do you really think all of this infrastructure was built for the good of the world?

Someone has to pay for it. To install it, to maintain it. Plus the countries still tax certain portions of it for revenue purposes.

So maybe it's free for a while. Then they raise the rates to where it should be, forcing you to sponge off the next carrier looking to jack up subscription rates.

    Good luck hopping around.
