Is there really any difference between listening to music on Youtube and downloading music for personal use?

I understand distributing it is illegal but if you just download it for your ipod or something how is it really any different?

YOUTUBE'S BETTER! gosh don't you know anything (KIDDING!) youtube has awesome music videos and you can comment and favorite and add videos!
