Is there really any such thing as a blue moon?

You hear it a lot in songs, but I've never ever seen one, and neither has my nan. Is it just a romantic thing for songs or has it ever really happened?

  1. "Blue Moon" is a farmers term used to discribe the second full moon in a month. It's somewhat of a rarity.

  2. The term "blue moon" began when Krakatoa blew its top and made the moon actually take on a bluish tint for awhile. Since an eruption like that is rare, anything rare is now spoken of as a blue moon. As referring to only the moon, two full moons are rare in a given month and thus the second one is called a blue moon.

  3. Yes, but it only happens once in a blue moon.

  4. yeah josie there is!

  5. literally, a blue moon is a blue moon. after volcanic eruptions (i.e. krakatoa) the moon has a blue tint.

    also.....

"blue moon" is another term for the second full moon in a month. its rare. thats where the term "once in a blue moon" comes from.

  6. A blue moon is just a weird name for an extra full moon. There are normally 12 full moons a year, but every two or three years there is a 13th full moon.  This full moon is called a blue moon even though it is not actually a blue colored moon.  I have no idea why they named it that though.
