Yes--but they aren't confined to the upper atmosphere--they are distributed throughout the atmosphere.

Scientists know this by measuring the amounts of different gases and comparing the results to records extending back to the 19th century.  That's now they know the amount of cO2 in the atmosphere is increasing.

Sure, by sampling.  That isn't the issue.

The issue is if human activity is what put them there

and if there's anything we can do to remove them

to allow the Earth to generally cool.
