  1. yup...look online for DNA testing.  I had my DNA tested when I became a bone marrow donor to help the registry  gage who I may donate too.  Pretty wide for me cause Im mixed.  So anyhow, maybe this may be another  option for you as well!

  2. I understand the ethnic tests do not give you specific nationality or ethnicities. What it will show is something like Northern European, East Asian, East African etc ec.

Y DNA is passed soley from father to son

Mitochodrial DNA is passed from the mother to both sons and daughters but ony the daughters pass it on to their children.

Those are the 2 types of DNA being used for genealogy testing.  If you have a brother he can have both his Y & Mitochondrial DNA tested to get your direct paternal and maternal lines but not all your ancestry.

Most of your DNA is autosomal.  You get it 50-50 from both parents.  It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or a male to his paternal grandmother or his maternal grandfather and all the wives in his direct paternal line and husbands in his direct maternal lines.

FamilyTreeDNA is the leader and you can put it in your search engine.  However, I understand they have discontinued doing ethnic testing.

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation is another source.  They are free but will put your report online for you to view.  It took about 6 months for me to be able to see mine.  They are trying to contract a company that will interpret the results for reasonable fee.  They are working to be able to use autosomal DNA in genealogy testing and hope to do so within a year. Put SMGF in your search engine.

  3. You can have a DNA test that will show you what different nationalities make up your blood, but the test can't tell you anything about the people, or their names or where they were born as such, just the area or continent.

Note that women and men can take the DNA test to show their maternal heritage, because women pass on their DNA to both genders, but only men can take the paternal DNA test, since women don't inherit this information from their fathers. If you want to trace your paternal line therefore, you will either need to ask your father, a brother, an uncle, or a male cousin on your paternal side.

There are various sites online, and you should look for the test that suits you, and the costs. You will pay more for more in-depth research, but if you don't need so much depth, you should be okay with the standard test.

I think last time I heard, the standard paternal DNA test was around £100 ($200), from www.ancestry.com
