If you are looking to start a business in skilled trades, it would serve you well to check with the municipality in which you would be located, to determine of any special licensure or union consideration need be made.  Technically, there is no requirement of cooperating with a union, even if one is associated with the work that you intend to do, but knowing of the existence of such, and repercussions for not being so associated may head off future trouble as you work to establish yourself.


  2. You don't need or even want a union to start a business.  You just need to go to your city hall if you want to start a sole proprietorship or simple partnership ($100).  If you want to start an incorporated business, go to a business lawyer (over $1000) or use an online service ( about $750, but not so tailored to your specific needs).
